I just want you to know that having a Mac is NO LONGER a reason that you can’t play this game.Test out the latest builds that are created every day. And if that’s not good enough for you, just read every other post about it on the internet, because this is not a guide to WHY you should play it, this is a guide for HOW you can play it. Any SHOOTER that gives you the possibility of a nonlethal play-through deserves a your money. It’s one of my favorite websites of all time. Thank You for your great article.I love GOG. No dear, it is not possible. The internet is inundated with advice, overviews, and troubleshooting for how to generally play windows games on Macs (Rampancy seems to be our resident GOG expert. Deus Ex is the first game on his list, and while I didn’t understand a word he wrote on there, it made me realize that it was possible to play this game on my Mac.I’m not technologically illiterate, but I didn’t know jack-squat about running windows programs on my Mac (without BUYING software like CrossOver or Windows or Parallels, which I had no intention of doing). I want to take a second to say a special thanks to Rampancy for his GOGmix “Mac Friendly/Open Source GOG Games”. But sometimes, the games I want to play aren’t available on Mac yet. And I’m going to include pictures. If I’m wrong… Sorry.I’m sure for some of you this is going to be baby talk, and I should be ashamed of how long it took me to figure out something so primitive, but there are loads of people like me who would LOVE to play this game, but simply don’t know how. It works on my 2007 iMac and on my 2011 Macbookpro, so I’m sure it’ll work on whatever machine you have. Now, is this the ONLY way to play Deus Ex on your Mac? NO Does this way work? ABSOUTLEY. So after playing it I decided to make a list of easy, step-by-step instructions so that the next poor fool who Googles “How to play Deus Ex on a Mac” can get it set up in 30 minutes instead of three days. And you know what? After three days I DID figure it out, and when I did, I realized it was actually really simple, if you know what to do. Purchase and Download Deus Ex from GOG. Lets get down to business.1. That was a whole lot of talking. Just take it slow and you’ll be UNATCO’s top agent in half an hour.Alright. I just hope the pictures aren’t too small, I was having some trouble.) Don’t be daunted by how long the instructions are, it’s long because I made it simple. Now you need to install an engine. Take your downloaded “Wineskin Winery” and put it somewhere pretty, like your desktop or whatever. Go ahead and download it.3. Google “Wineskin Winery” and the first link should bring you here. You’ll be left with a file you can’t read.2. BOOM now you have a new engine in your Winery. Take your downloaded file and open it, then click “install” on the Wineskin Installer.9. Click on the link and scroll down to the newest version, which for me is “WS9WINE1.7.9-Installer.app.zip” Download it.8. Let’s just get the newest one, which at the time is Wine 1.7.x (it’s highlighted in the picture).7. Should take you to this page. There’s a couple ways you can do this, but the way I’ll be demonstrating is by clicking “Download Packages Manually.” Unfortunately at the time I’m writing this, the link is broken… So go back to that first downloads webpage I showed you and click the mediafire link in the “manually installed item downloads” box (see image 1).6. ![]() Go ahead and click “Install Software”14. When opened, it should look like this. Then you can click “OK” and CLOSE your Winery and OPEN your new wrapper!13. Alright, we’re almost there. Now, I heard plenty of different opinions on which video device to use, but like I said, this worked on a 2007 iMac and a 2011 Macbookpro, so let’s give it a try.18. My screen was glitchy using the suggested “Direct3D Support”, so click on “Show all devices” and chose OpenGL Support. Click “Launch Game” and you’ll be asked which 3D video device you want to use. That was the easy stuff, this is the part that actually took me a long time to figure out. Now we need to do some troubleshooting. Unfortunately because of things I don’t understand, you CAN NOT change the brightness level in game. The game takes place totally at night, so if you’re finding it hard to see in this well lit building, something ain’t right. If you start the “training” and can’t see the door on the other side of the room, it’s too dark. Mine was, and I installed it several times and used different 3D devices on both computers. If you can’t find it, you need to RIGHT CLICK your wrapper (the one you named Deus Ex) and chose SHOW PACKAGE CONTENTS. You need to get back to the “new wrapper” box (see image 6). Close the game and click “ok” on whatever pops up. This time it should be perfect. You did it! You’re playing Deus Ex on your Mac! You’re awesome! Deus Ex is awesome! GOG is awesome! WHOOOOOOOO!!!!I’ll admit that sometimes it’s a little glitchy starting up or closing down, but that’s kinda just life. Click done, close that little box, and try playing your game again (double click your wrapper you created and named). That’s what I did, if you don’t like it, then you can come and adjust it later, since you know where it is now :D (took me too long to find on my own…)21. Look at the “extra Gamma Correction” slider, and move it all the way from “none” to “very bright”. Hey! I recognize that little box! This time click “Set Screen Options” and you should get this. There should be “contents” “drive_c” and “wineskin”. Go there and look for the System directory, which should contain the deusex.exe. This will open a standard file dialogue of which the current directory should be drive_c.(Now, if the game was not installed, the following stuff might not be there.)Unless you changed the standard installation path there should be a GOG Games directory which contains a 'DeusEx' directory (not sure about the exact name). This should open a window like image_6 of fredzillanator's comment. This should open wineskin advanced settings with the Configuration tab selected (if not, choose Configuration from the three tabs at the top of the window).Right below the tab bar is a text field called Windows EXE:, click the Browse button beside it. You could try the following.Double click your wrapper in the Finder while holding down the alt-key. I’ve only had it quit ONCE on me while I was actually playing.Having problems? This is a forum isn’t it? Post your questions and comments and I’m sure someone smarter than me will be able to help you.My next endeavor was going to be Planescape: Torment, but GOG already Mac-ed it up for us, BECAUSE THEY’RE AWESOME.Hmm, from that error message it seems like the game got installed, but the wrapper couldn't detect the executable for starting the game. But the game itself runs perfectly and is 100% playable. Free mac cache cleanerYou could try the following.(Now, if the game was not installed, the following stuff might not be there. Double click your wrapper in the Finder to start the game.If everything went well you should be at point 16 in fredzillanator's list, right after clicking 'Launch Game' (which you didn't have to do).Konpeki: Hmm, from that error message it seems like the game got installed, but the wrapper couldn't detect the executable for starting the game.
